The process of handmade glass starts with a furnace of molten lead free crystal. The added colors come from metals such as gold, silver, copper, and amethyst to get the vibrant reds, blues, golds, purples, and greens in the glass.

Working the material always starts with a dipped metal rod coated in glowing orange molten glass. Adding a new layer on top of the first allows for more material to make larger works. Working with an assistant in the studio allows the artist to balance his physical capabilities with the ideas and scale needed to express them.

Once the piece has cooled off from its molten state, the process of coldworking can begin. This is achieved through flattening wheels, grinding wheels and other tools coated in diamonds. Finally the works are dated and signed by Matthew using a diamond coated bit to carve away the glass.
